As terras as margens do rio Acaraú eram habitadas por diversas etnias indígenas tais como os Tupinambá,[6] Areriú.[7]
Com a expansão da Estrada de Ferro de Sobral-Camocim na direção de Ipu a partir de 1893, no então distrito de Sobral foi construído uma estação de trem, e consolida o núcleo urbano hoje chamado Cariré.[8]
Cariré surgiu como um arraial no último quartel do século XIX no Sertão Centro Norte. Beneficiado com a Estrada de Ferro de Sobral, figurou na divisão territorial e administrativa do Brasil, como distrito do município de Sobral. A inauguração da estação de Cariré pela rede de Viação Cearense a 1º de novembro de 1893, naquele referido arraial, impulsionou o seu desenvolvimento, influenciando a formação do futuro município.

Festa do padroeiro, Santo Antônio de Pádua, 13 de junho
Marcha para Jesus, no dia do evangélico – segundo sábado de Agosto

Vaquejada e Expo-Cariré – setembro
