De acordo com matérias do TechCrunch e do 9to5Mac, o Instagram não prendente voltar ao feed cronológico. De acordo com a plataforma, o uso de algoritmo, implantado em 2016, aumentou o número de publicações vistas pelos usuários, que chega a 90% do que é compartilhado pelos amigos. Apesar disso, boa parte dos usuários da rede preferia a maneira antiga de acompanhar as fotos de seus amigos.
O Instagram leva em conta três fatores para mostrar uma imagem ao usuário. O primeiro é o interesse, que mostra ao usuário da plataforma publicações de acordo com a sua reação a conteúdos similares no passado.
O segundo é a data de compartilhamento, que dá prioridades às publicações mais recentes. Já o último critério é o relacionamento. Ou seja, pessoas com que o usuário interage mais, através de curtidas, comentários e marcações, são mostradas no topo do feed de notícias.
A rede social ainda esclareceu que não favorece pessoas que usam Stories, ao vivo ou outra função da rede, bem como não dá prioridade a páginas pessoais ou profissionais.
